The Last Polar Bear Facing the Truth of a Warming World

Posted on Jan 05, 2009 under Book | No Comment

The Last Polar Bear Facing the Truth of a Warming World

An intimate photographic expose on the fragile existence of the polar bear, paired with essays revealing our critical connection to life in the Arctic

200 full-color images of the polar bear in its Arctic habitat, taken over a six-year period

All-star roster of top nature essayists, including Richard Nelson, Steven C. Amstrup, Charles Wohlforth, and Theodore Roosevelt IV, among others

The Last Polar Bear Project is a book, exhibit, media, and educational outreach campaign funded through the generosity of individual donors and foundations.

Scientists agree that by the end of this century the polar bear will be the first mammal threatened with extinction due to climate change. The Last Polar Bear is the first book to fully document that story. The continued survival of these magnificent white bears in their warming, and melting, Arctic world is uncertain, yet their fate is also a wake-up call-compelling us to act now to stem global warming. Through Steven Kazlowski’s unparalleled imagery, the most critical environmental issue of our time is brought to life.

The Last Polar Bear places the reality of climate change in our hands. We see the plight of the polar bear, an indicator species already feeling the detrimental effects of our reliance on fossil fuels, as its icy habitat melts.

Over the course of the last six years, wildlife photographer Steven Kazlowski has photographed the polar bear in its wild habitat, from Hershel Island in Canada to Point Hope in Alaska. The Last Polar Bear pairs his intimate images with anecdotes about his Arctic adventures, as well as authoritative essays about the polar bear in the context of climate change. Alaska based writers Richard Nelson, Charles Wohlforth, Nick Jans, and leading USGS polar bear biologist Steven C. Amstrup draw on decades of experience in the Arctic to cover the biological, cultural, and anthropological aspects of climate change. Daniel Glick, long-time correspondent for Newsweek, addresses the history of climate change while Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council, and Theodore Roosevelt IV offer perspectives on activism and politics.

5 Stars Is there hope?
I have been following global warming issues on the BBC News web site for a while, and have read about the shrinking Arctic ice over the past few seasons. I didn’t realize the damage done to the ecosystem was as bad as it was until I read this book, which deals not only with polar bears, but with other animals, as well as the indigenous peoples of the North. Although the author pleads that it is not a hopeless situation, it was difficult for me not to think that things may have gone beyond the tipping point. Most heartbreaking for me was an account of baby walruses being placed on an ice floe by mothers who could no longer feed them because the food supply wasn’t there. More accounts continued from there. It’s what I didn’t want to hear, but exactly what I needed to hear. No words were minced, nothing candy-coated, yet nothing sensationalized. It breaks my heart to think that in my children’s lifetimes, the only polar bears left may be in zoos. But in all of that, the author begs us to hope – hope AND work – that as a species, we can help save the polar bear and other creatures caught up in the spiral of global warming.

This book is a masterpiece. In a world of white, Mr. Kazlowski, the photographer, found a wealth of color. Each picture is more compelling than the previous one. I have enjoyed sharing this book with everyone that comes to my house. I am in awe of the dedication it took to get each and every shot, and thank Mr. Kazlowski for his hard work and sacrifice. The contributing writers’ essays are wonderfully crafted on a variety of pertinent topics – polar bears and arctic foxes, polar bears and the Inupiat, the real price of oil. There is an incredible account of the harvesting of a bowhead whale, and what the hunters found. The money I spent on this book was more than worth it. I recommend ‘The Last Polar Bear’ whole-heartedly.

5 Stars ursus maritimus forever
By Dag Stomberg (St. Andrews, Scotland)

I write to sound the praises of this extraordinary book.

Truly, a help for all of us to see the POLAR DISTRESS and

what to do for saving endangered bears.

5 Stars superb piece of work
This book is a superb piece of work. The written commentaries and the photographs are excellent. It is a must have for every home. Steven Kazlowski’s talents truly shine in this publication!

5 Stars Full of knowledge book
I haven’t finished reading the whole book since this one has lots of words, more pages of articles than those of images. Rather than just introducing the polar bears, it is a more serious book that tries to spread the message of protecting our fragile enviroments as wide as possible.

If you are wildlife-lover, reading this book will give you more clear images how the climate changes affects the arctic enviroments seriously and why we should try to take some actions before tragedy happens.

Highly Recommneded.

5 Stars Amazing facts and even more amazing photos!
Wow! I have a few of his books, all good, but this tops them all. I love polar bears and even have a few of his nature prints on my walls. This book is enlightening and the facts are alarming. Great job, once again.

5 Stars An attention getter
My 16 month old grandson loves this book. Easy reading and the pictures of the animals are lovely illustrated. I have purchased another one for a baby shower gift.

5 Stars a great sleepytime book
This is one of those wonderful books that you can read to your child at bedtime when they just want to hear the sound of your voice. there is nothing too exciting going on, you can just have your child close their eyes, you can stroke their hair, and read this sweet story. OR, during the day, you can animate all of the animals’ voices and have the child touch the great tactile pages. It is a great book!

5 Stars Exquisite
This book is fantastic. The illustrations are beyond beautiful, and the story is so cute.

This book tells the story of a little polar bear cub searching for his mother. He gets all of his animal friends, including a fox, rabbit, owl, duck, and more to help him build a mother out of snow. Soon all of his friends have to go home and he is alone, but in the end his mother finds him and he’s happy again.

This is an adorable book, and a must read, even if it’s only for the illustrations.

5 Stars Beautiful illustrations and an engaging story
This book is one of my 3 year old daughter’s favorites. It has a wonderful story about a little bear searching for his mom, and describes how he and his woodland friends make a substitute snow mom for the night. Beautiful story (For anyone familiar with Chinaberry, I’m sure we’ll see this book offered by them soon, it is ‘that’ quality of a book)
